Official Rule Set
The Summer League follows the USA Volleyball Simplified Youth Rules as the foundation for all play. The league-specific rules below apply in addition to - and in cases of conflict, take precedence over - the USA Volleyball guidelines.
Game Format
All matches are best of three games, played with rally scoring.
- Games 1 and 2 are played to 25 points.
- Game 3 (if needed) is played to 15 points.
- A team must win by 2 points in all games.
- Each team receives one timeout per game.
Serving
Players may choose to serve underhand or overhand. The serving position depends on which style is used:
- Underhand serve: Player serves from the 10-foot line (the attack line).
- Overhand serve: Player serves from behind the service line (the standard back boundary).
Players must declare their serve type before each service attempt. Switching serve type mid-rotation is allowed.
Net Height
The net is set at 6 feet 6 inches for all divisions and all games.
Equipment
All games are played with the Tachikara Volley-Lite ball. Teams are not permitted to substitute a different ball during play without approval from the referee. If you need to purchase one, this listing on Amazon carries the regulation ball.
Coaching
Each team is permitted:
- 1 head coach
- 1 assistant coach
Coaches must remain in the designated coaching zone during play. All coaches are expected to model positive sportsmanship and respect toward players, officials, and opposing teams. Unsportsmanlike conduct may result in a warning, point penalty, or removal from the bench at the referee's discretion.
Volunteer Responsibilities
Each team is required to provide two volunteers per match to help run the game:
- The home team provides a volunteer to operate the scoreboard.
- The away team provides a volunteer to keep the score book.
- Each team provides a line judge.
Volunteers should arrive before the match begins and remain through the final point. Failure to provide a volunteer may result in a delay of game.
